Understanding HS codes and customs classification

The Harmonized System (HS) code is an internationally standardised numerical classification for traded products. Customs authorities in every country use it to determine duty rates, applicable regulations, and whether a shipment needs additional review.
Why it matters
- An incorrect HS code is one of the most common causes of a customs hold or re-examination.
- It directly determines the duty rate applied to your shipment — an inaccurate code can mean overpaying or underpaying duty, the latter of which can trigger penalties.
- Certain codes flag goods as regulated (e.g. requiring a specific licence or certificate), even if the product itself seems straightforward.
Getting it right
HS codes are typically 6 digits at the international level, with countries adding further digits for national-level classification. If you're unsure of your product's correct code, our customs brokerage team can assist with classification as part of the quote or booking process — this is a standard part of our AEO-certified customs service, not a separate paid add-on for account customers.
Never guess an HS code to save time. If it's wrong, it can delay your shipment far longer than getting the correct classification would have taken up front.
